Deloris Marshall: A Champion for Justice Celebrates 90 Years

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Rose Garden in Allentown was the site of a heartfelt celebration on Saturday, May 24, 2025, as Deloris Marshall marked her 90th birthday. Known for her unwavering commitment to civil rights and advocacy for the underprivileged, Marshall has left an indelible mark on the City of Allentown.
"Deloris Marshall was a devoted servant of Jesus Christ. She loved Him first and then her neighbors," reflected her son, Fredrick Wayne Marshall.
Throughout her life, Marshall has fought tirelessly against injustice. "She was a true advocate for those who couldn't speak for themselves, especially seniors," he noted. Her activism began in the 1960s, helping Community Action Lehigh Valley flourish. Dawn Godshall, CEO of Community Action Lehigh Valley, praised her efforts: "It's because of her fight that we're still here today."
Marshall also made significant contributions while working with the Allentown Housing Authority. "My mother protested to ensure that home values were equitable and fought against the discrimination African-Americans faced from real estate agents," her son explained.
In the 1970s, she earned her degree in social work from Cedar Crest College, leaving a lasting impact on the institution. "She’s a delight," said Cedar Crest College President Elizabeth Meade. "I had the privilege of meeting her at several alumni events."
Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk honored Marshall with a proclamation recognizing her vital role in the city's history. This is not her first recognition; she has received a key to the city and has been featured in the New York Times. "She is a well-respected and recognized figure," Tuerk added.
At 90, Marshall currently battles Alzheimer’s and dementia, with her son taking on the honor of her care. "I couldn’t be more proud of my mother," he shared.
Deloris Marshall's legacy continues to inspire the community, reminding us of the importance of fighting for justice and equality.
